Seals at Black Point Beach, Shelburne County

Today, we decided to go for a little tour. We wanted to drive past a property for sale (no good), we also wanted to look for a store that we stopped at in September 2007. It was a little country store that we *thought* was near New Germany on Hwy 10. However, after several trips across the province (it's not that big across) on Hwy's 10, 12 and 14, and not finding the store, we decided it had to be on #8. It wasn't there either. You have to understand. Jeff's favorite snack food, aside from the newly discovered Solmon Gundy (which is pickled herring for those of you not familiar), are pepperettes. These appear to be a rarity in Nova Scotia. This is a bit of a problem as Jeff wanders the house late in the evening in search of snacks and frothing at the mouth. This store had a German shopkeeper and in addition to the typical variety store snacks sold pepperettes and sausages. The problem is, we can't find it. We didn't find it again. I am beginning to think it's a bit "Brigadoon-ish" and perhaps only appears to those in need, or once every hundred years.

After a fruitless, or should I say pepperrette-less, search, we continued onto a beach that Justin requested we visit when we were here in September. Time and location didn't allow on that trip, but we made our way to Black Point beach. I am so glad that we did.

Black Point beach is a large, rocky beach consisting of large and small cobblestone type rocks. Well-rounded by the ever crashing surf, these rocks are soft-edged and a beautiful grey colour. The waves crash onto the beach, and then the water sifts back through the rocks with mighty roar as the cobbles knock together with the force of the water. It was quite loud even though the waves weren't huge. I am sure when there is a big blow the noise is deafening.

Stupendous as this display of nature was, the highlight for me was the seals. There were several of them off the coast diving around. They didn't come in very close, but it was great, and Jeff's telescopic lens proved to be worth the price. See for yourself!
