Joggins Fossil Cliffs and Centre

Justin has been given a heritage assignment at school and after some discussion, Joggin’s Fossil Cliff was chosen by him as his topic. Located on the Bay of Fundy, the fossil cliff at Joggin’s was declared a UNESCO world heritage site this year. Lesley gave them a call and even though they are closed for the season, they invited us up there for a tour today!
After a three hour drive we arrived at our destination to be met by Andrew the PR guy for the center. He introduced us to Brian, the head fossil interpreter. Together they took us down to the beach for a tour of the fossil cliffs. Brian showed Justin various interesting features while Lesley filmed them. Justin is hoping to put together a video tour as part of the assignment. While they were being filmed, Andrew pointed out interesting features to Kaitlynn and me. Once back at the center, Justin interviewed Brian in more detail about the cliffs. Afterwards Brian gave us a tour of the various exhibits. It’s interesting to note that a number of the most interesting fossils at the center were donated by Brian.
Apparently Joggins was known for its coal deposits and fossils as far back as the early 17th century and had been mined from the early 1700’s on. In the 1870’s fossils found at Joggins were instrumental in promoting Darwin’s theory of evolution to the English scientific circles.
We had a wonderful time. It’s really cool to get a private tour and I can’t thank the staff enough!
